School transport assistance is provided within the transport zone of the school that a student attends. Generally, a student must travel to the zone boundary in order to access a free school bus journey.

The Ministry of Education has provided a mapping tool to help schools to confirm their transport zone. These zones should be based on the halfway points between neighbouring schools, but on occasion this mapping tool has shown an incorrect location.
